Cheraw has been the official name since the town's incorporation in 1820. During the Revolution, Cheraw was the center of a terrible civil war. The town was held at various times by both the British and the American partisans, and St. David's church was used by both armies as a hospital.

The Town of Cheraw presents the 48 th Spring Festival and this year it returns to 2 days! The festival will be held on Saturday, April 5 th (10:00am - 6:00pm) and Sunday, April 6 th (12:00pm – 5:00pm) in downtown Cheraw.

Cheraw is known for its beautiful historic architecture, but our history runs even deeper. Cheraw is the home of famed Jazz trumpeter John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie. Born in 1917 on Huger Street, he touched countless lives through his long career.

The Cheraw Community Center (200 Powe Street) has a basketball court, classrooms, teen center, game rooms, art gallery, administrative office, and banquet facilities. Check out the changing exhibits in the Burr Art Gallery.
