Cheng Tang [a] (born Zi Lü [b] [1]), recorded on oracle bones as Tai Yi [1] or Da Yi, was the first king of the Shang dynasty. Tang is traditionally considered a virtuous ruler, as signified by his common nickname Tang the Perfect.

According to legend, the Shang Dynasty was founded sometime around 1600 BCE by a virtuous man named Cheng Tang, who overthrew the evil king of the legendary Xia.

Cheng Tang who ruled the Shang became determined to overthrow the Xia Dynasty emperor Jie. Jie was a tyrant who due to his cruelety and mistreatment of his people had gained many enemies. Cheng Tang had gathered support from numerous tribes and around 1675 BC the Shang Dynasty was ushered in when Cheng Tang defeated Jie at the Battle of Mingtiao.

The Shang dynasty succeeded the Xia dynasty around 1600 BC when Cheng Tang overthrew King Jie, the 17th King of the Xia. It is the earliest dynasty in Chinese history of which there are written records.

Cheng Tang (ca. 18th c. BCE) was also known as Tang the Conqueror (see Shi Ji #3; GSR I, p.41ff). He overthrew the last Xia ruler, the evil 桀癸 Jie Gui, and established the 商 Shang dynasty.
