Oct 30, 2010 · My brick patio is very level. Unfortunately, a nearby tree has sent a root that is now causing a brick to pop up. Before the issue spreads I'd like to pry the brick up and remove the offending root. What are my options to get the brick in and out without damaging it or surrounding bricks? You may have to place something in the back of the hole to keep the brick mortar from falling down the back side.

I think they work best where there is only a live wire and everything else is wood air, brick or plaster/drywall. I'm pretty sure that any significant metalwork nearby can make it difficult or impossible to get an accurate indication. –
