The 2003 Derrybrien landslide occurred on 31 October 2003, on the side of Cashlaundrumlahan, a hill near Derrybrien in County Galway, Ireland. Apr 26, 2017 · Bog bursts correspond in appearance and mechanism to spreading failures ( DoE, 1996) and tend to occur in deeper peat (greater than 1.5m) on shallow slopes (2 to 10°) where deeper peat deposits are more likely to be found (Mills, 2002). Reports of bog burst failures are generally most common in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

In raised bogs, bog bursts occur when the edges give way following intensive drainage and turf cutting. Bog bursts can lead to further erosion if the bare peat is not quickly re-colonised by plant growth. A research strand on bog bursts is included in the EPA funded BOGLAND project.
