Feb 3, 2011 · I made my own ball vise. It is heavier than the GRS vise, but comes in handy when doing a barreled action project. I did not plate my ball vise. You would have to live to be 200 years old to put any wear on the ball. No rust problems at all on my vise.

Nov 12, 2023 · Going to the grs vise isn’t much of an upgrade. I also started on a cheap Chinese ball vise. When I got my grs I used it for a few months then sold it to buy the Lindsay palm control and low profile. If I wasn’t able to get the Lindsay vises I would have sold the grs and kept the cheap vise. Just my 2 cents.

May 10, 2012 · The hot melt glue is a good idea. Have also seen a pitch pan with a lug that you can put into almost any vise for holding odd shapes or small items. Many things to figure out and learn, I fortunately have a LOT of copper to play with. Thanks to all for your encouragement! Kate

Mar 21, 2020 · I have experimented with a number of vises over the years. 1st harbor freight centering vise mounted on Dad's old bowling ball placed inside a cherry wood box filled with marbles. A little cumbersome, but the kids kept playing with the marbles, need less to say many marbles never returned. Next cheap ball vise, terrible quality.

Sep 10, 2016 · Thee things are not rocket science. I use a bowling ball in a PVC floor flange with a machinist vise bolted to the top, no bearings etc.. As simple as these are, a little tune up of the moving parts should get you going. Take it apart, check the above listed parts, most likely you have a burr somewhere that is hanging it up.

Mar 25, 2019 · Thanks, know what you mean and will polish these areas.But this vise won’t rotate anymore. I will fix it at a 6“ ø x 0.8“ stainless steel plate (nice weight ) Should be placed with a non-slip coating on my turntable of same dimension (all together very nice weight )

May 2, 2017 · The vise that I had been using for hammer and chisel work could be turned 360 degrees but the offset jaws meant the work could never be centered over the pivot – and its size and irregular shape made it hard to handle with one hand. Clearly, I needed a rotary style ball vise where my work could be centered and easily turned.

Aug 15, 2007 · as a last resort get your buns, i mean your bearings to an ultrasonic cleaner. it may be possible the vibrations may jar that little bugger loose. sam is right, esp. for a bearing that gets the little abuse that the ball vise bearing gets- they don't just suddenly go awry. gotta be a little bugger in there somewhere. ultrasonic cleaning might ...
