Chinese characters, known as Hànzì (汉字), form the basis of Chinese writing and differ markedly from the alphabet system used in Western languages. Unlike letters of the alphabet, logograms represent words or compounds of words.

Traditional Chinese characters are a standard set of Chinese character forms used to write Chinese languages. In Taiwan, the set of traditional characters is regulated by the Ministry of Education and standardized in the Standard Form of National Characters.

Chinese characters, known in Chinese as hanzi, have a history dating back over 3000 years to oracle bone inscriptions of the Shang Dynasty. As one of the world’s oldest continuously used writing systems, hanzi developed into a sophisticated logographic system with thousands of unique characters.
