The Alpina C1 was based on the E21 323i and was among their most popular early models, providing superior performance over the unmodified car. The C1 2.3 made 125 kW (168 hp) and 225 N⋅m (166 lb⋅ft) of torque. 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is achieved in 7.8 seconds.

Jan 5, 2022 · Compared to the E30 BMW M3, the Alpina C1 2.3 is less powerful. However, its eponymous upgraded ‘M20’ 2.3-liter inline-six engine makes 170 hp, Gooding & Co reports. Even after its mid-1983 upgrade, the 323i that the C1 is based on only made 148 hp. And while the C1’s 7.8-second 0-62 mph time doesn’t seem fast today, it was in 1983.

But it's worth the effort: it's a very rare car, one of 462 C1 2.3s made worldwide and one of only a fraction of those built in Buchloe by the Alpina factory. So a refresh began. And here is the story.

In 1981 the 2.8 litre unit was upgraded with the more reliable Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection and power rose from 200 to 218 BHP. In 1980 Alpina introduced the C1 2.3 to close the gap between the 323i and the B6 2.8. This engine was based on the 2.3 litre unit.

The Alpina C1 is based on the BMW 323i. When the E21 3-series was introduced in 1976, Alpina offered the C1 2.3 with a 6-cylinder engine. It had a 170 ps engine with performance equal to the A4/3, however the C1 2.3 had considerably greater refinement.
