Ali Pasha (1740 – 24 January 1822), commonly known as Ali Pasha of Ioannina or Ali Pasha of Tepelena, was an Albanian ruler who served as Ottoman pasha of the Pashalik of Yanina, a large part of western Rumelia.

Ali Paşa Tepelenë was an Albanian brigand who, by murder and intrigue, became pasha, or provincial governor, of Janina from 1788. He extended his capricious rule within the Ottoman Empire over much of Albania and Macedonia, Epirus, Thessaly, and the Morea.

Ali Pasha was the name of numerous Ottoman pashas named Ali. It is most commonly used to refer to Ali Pasha of Ioannina. [citation needed]

In 1806, Ali sent forces under the command of his sons Veli Pasha and Muhtar Pasha to aid the Ottoman effort in defeating the First Serbian Uprising in the Sanjak of Smederevo.

Ali Pasha of Jannina (1741-1822) dominated Albania and most of Greece during the Napoleonic period. Based in the Epirus (Northern Greece) city of Jannina he developed a virtually independent principality, whilst retaining his nominal position as the Ottoman governor.

Ali Pasha of Tepelena or the "Lion of Yannina", (1741 – January 24, 1822) was a Muslim Albanian ruler (pasha) of the western part of Rumelia, the Ottoman Empire 's European territory in modern day northwestern Greece which was also called Pashalik of Janina.

For 32 years (1788–1822), Ali Pasha ruled Epirus and most of Albania, Macedonia (up to Thessaloniki) and the Peloponnese (except Mani), Northern Euboea, Thessaly and Central Greece, as well as parts of Skopje (Monastiri, Ohrid).
