Alexa Irene Canady (born November 7, 1950) is a retired American medical doctor specializing in pediatric neurosurgery. She was born in Lansing, Michigan and earned both her bachelors and medical degree from the University of Michigan.

Alexa Irene Canady had almost dropped out of college as an undergraduate, but after recovering her self-confidence she went on to qualify as the first African American woman neurosurgeon in the United States.

As the first African American woman neurosurgeon, Dr. Canady spent much of her surgical career at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan where, through her efforts, the Neurosurgery Program achieved national recognition as a top pediatric neurosurgery department in the United States.

When her internship ended in 1976, Canady moved to the University of Minnesota, becoming, as a resident of the university's department of neurosurgery, the first female African-American neurosurgery resident in the United States.
