Dec 30, 2023 · The ALCO RS-11 was introduced in 1956, replacing the RS-3 as ALCO's general-purpose four-axle road switcher. It used a 12-cylinder 251-series engine developing 1,800 horsepower, which proved more reliable than the earlier 244-series engine, and it was very similar in size and power to EMD's competing GP9 and GP18.

This locomotive is the only RS11 to be given the Yellow nose treatment, all others were given the all blue 'Altschul blue' scheme with a variety of lettering fonts.

This locomotive, classified by Alco as model DL-701, was their replacement for the very popular RS-3 road-switcher. Featuring a V-12, 1,800hp 251B diesel engine, the RS-11 was Alco’s answer to EMD’s very successful GP9.

Built from Feb 1956 to June 1961, the 1800hp 251B-powered ALCO RS11 gave strong competition to EMD's GP-9. Even with it's quicker acceleration and higher tractive effort, the versatile RS-11 wasn't ultimately as successful as EMD's GP-9, and as a result Conrail inherited fewer of them than their GM counterparts.
