The Akha are an ethnic group who live in small villages at higher elevations in the mountains of Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Yunnan Province in China. They made their way from China into Southeast Asia during the early 20th century.

The Akha are originally from China, where most of them still live today. Over the last few hundred years, though, they have migrated into Burma (Myanmar), the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Akha hill tribe people live in China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. In China, they mostly live in Yunnan province , and in Myanmar, you will find Akha villages in Shan State . In North Thailand, you will find most of the Akha villages in Chiang Rai province .
