The Abbess is always an Austrian Archduchess, and must be at least eighteen years of age before she can assume the duties of her office. Her insignia are a pectoral cross, the ring, the staff, and a princely cornet.

Generally speaking nuns of Religious Orders not governed by an abbess, may wear a ring after their solemn profession (such as Poor Clares). Abbesses don a ring as symbol of authority over the monastery of her community. The other member of her community do not wear rings.

The Abbatial ring is the prime symbol of the covenantal bond between the Abbess and her community. The Abbess’ obligation for the ongoing life of each member of the community and for the community as a whole demands a level of unceasing care and vigilance: the ring signifies the intimacy and strength of this bond.

The abbess of Conversano acquired for herself the right to a pectoral cross, ring, crozier and mitre at some point--though the crozier itself is hardly unusual and is still a symbol of their authority today.
