
Auxiliary Territorial Service - Wikipedia
The Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS; often pronounced as an acronym) was the women's branch of the British Army during the Second World War. It was formed on 9 September 1938, initially as a women's voluntary service, and existed until 1 February 1949, when it was merged into the Women's Royal Army Corps .

Many former members of the Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps (QMAAC) joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), which was formed in September 1938. Its first Chief Controller was QMAAC veteran Dame Helen Gwynne-Vaughan. The ATS served with distinction throughout the Second World War (1939-45).

Recruits would be sent to army camps where they would receive basic training and at the end of four weeks of training they would be given a role within the ATS.
