The new smart remote I/O expansion unit works in conjunction with ABB’s RMC-100 Controller to offer easy expansion of up to 22 I/O modules, automating and enhancing production.

This document describes the XIO Interface application used for communication with ABB Totalflow Extendible IOs (XIOs). The application may not be activated from the factory but, like all Totalflow applications, is available to be added as needed.

New networking features allow the XIO to support up to four independent networks, two independent switch networks, and the ability to use the XIO’s Wi-Fi** as an independent network or to bridge with one of the Ethernet ports.

The ABB XIO Platform allows for hot-pluggable and hot-interchanging of TFIO Modules to allow for infield service and expansion dynamically. The XIO provides the flexibility to expand not just I/O, but also field connectivity, and interoperability in the same device.

XIO Quick Start IMPORTANT NOTE: This guide covers basic information for XIO startup and communication with ABB Totalflow remote controllers. It assumes the XIO factory default configuration is intact. See the XIO User Manual for detailed instructions. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® are optional features and may not be included in every model.

The XIO is a smart, remote, local connectivity module that not only provides additional serial ports, Ethernet ports, and additional I/Os, but also allows for multiple, smart expansion module combinations to be connected in the same loop, automatically recognized by the main controller.
