X4 Foundations (I'd call this 4x-adjacent) - really cool to experience a first-person "4x" game. It gets grindy if you're laser-focused on big, long-term goals, but the minute-to-minute "I've landed my fighter on my carrier on my space station" or "I'm looking out the space station windows at a non-scripted sandbox battle" moments are incredible

Games like Civ, yes. Conquer the world and/or universe. Topically involve diplomacy, research, trade, etc. StarCraft and Age of Empires are real time strategy games, more focused on tactical battles. More focused on the final x, if you will Not saying they are bad games - definitely are good games - but not typically considered 4x.

Mar 5, 2018 · However, if you can get past the UI, Aurora easily becomes one of the most in-depth 4x games out there. On the "historical" side of things there's FreeCiv which I personally haven't had a ton of experience with, but have heard that it's pretty good. Can't personally speak for any fantasy games though. Aug 1, 2014 · Due to the turn based nature of most 4X games, you probably can run most of them fine. About the only thing you will struggle with are ones you heavily mod. I would suggest possibly trying Endless Space or even taking a step back and playing Civ 4, which is a different game from Civ 5 altogether in my books.

Players develop and grow their interstellar empire from the humble beginnings on their homeworld to conquer the universe, or be pummeled into the ashes of history by opposing races.

However what sets apart 4X games is easier to explain. 4X stands for explore, expand, exploit, exterminate; you need all 4 to make a strategy game a 4X game. Most grand strategy games are generally missing one of those. Additionally, 4X games tend to be more abstract and "gamey", they have a much more clear progression of early game, mid-game ...

It should be easy enough to figure out the indie games (e.g. publisher says (indie)). But in all honesty nearly all 4x except Civilization, Total War, Stellaris, Age of Wonders, Galactic Civilizations and Endless Space/Legends are indie nowadays (you might even call all of them but Civ and TW indie).
