Feb 10, 2023 · If you need a heavy-hitting close-range cartridge, go with the 45-70. If you want a lighter-hitting longer-range cartridge, go with the 556. The 556 is a better cartridge for target shooting, and the 45-70 is better for hunting that is the main difference.

The 45/70 is a kicker and blast will be a factor with a short barrel .308- especially if fired at night. The 5.56 is not a good stopper.

I use .45-70 for deer hunting and the impact energy seems to be similar to the amount of force exerted to my shoulder when firing... aka physics ;) For somebody to fly back when shot, the firearm would need to have created a greater force to the shooter's shoulder or have rocket propulsion cartridges lol
