Next (and most important) question: On the 4066, to switch (the switches) on, I raise the control pin to +5v, to turn them off do I need to take the control pin to -5v or will ground work.

Which appeared to work, but one issue I found was that when the IC was unpowered the circuits defaulted to a state that bridged or triggered a button push.

Mar 18, 2010 · The 4066's have too much resistance to be used with greater than line-level signals. try using 2.2k for your pull-down resistor. That will give roughly 5.6mA current max through your 1N4148 diodes.

Nov 11, 2014 · The voltage that 4066 can switch is limited by its supply rails. If the switched signal extends outside of the supply rails, the 4066 will clip it. A relay can switch considerably higher voltages. A mechanical relay would introduce practically no noise into the signal that it's switching. The 4066 will introduce a small amount of noise.

Nov 27, 2020 · Each "switch" in the 4066 is the same as a spst switch contact. The 4017 output is controlling the state of the "contact". A high to the 4066 control pin closes the switch contact. A low opens the switch contact. If you place an inverter between the 4017 output and the 4066 control pin, you will reverse the control of the switch.
