While rare, the incidents were retold and embellished by dime novel and magazine authors during the late 19th and the early 20th century. The most notable shootouts took place on the American frontier in Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Archer Gang (the 1880s) – Much like the Reno Brothers, who had operated two decades earlier, the Archer brothers — Thomas, Mort, John, and Sam, raided Orange and Marion Counties in Indiana for several decades. Sam Bass Gang (1877-1878) – Led by Sam Bass, this gang robbed trains and banks in Texas.

While cowhands were still respected in West Texas, [5] in Cochise County the outlaws' crimes and their notoriety grew such that during the 1880s it was an insult to call a legitimate cattleman a "cowboy."

Jan 1, 2006 · Jesse Evans was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to 10 years in the state prison at Huntsville Penitentiary. Arriving at Huntsville on December 1, 1880, Evans entered as prisoner #9078. Almost 18 months later, on May 23, 1882, Evans went over the wall and disappeared from history.

Nov 29, 2015 · By the summer of 1880, the citizens of Las Vegas, New Mexico organized a team of vigilantes against the gang. Webb, Mather and Rudabaugh were arrested. Hoodoo Brown was not killed but instead driven from the state.

At around 3am on 28 June 1880 officers from the train surrounded the Glenrowan Inn. The Kelly Gang, realising their original plan had failed, put on their now-famous homemade armour and prepared to fight. The police began to shoot as the gang stepped out of the inn.

The siege at Glenrowan on Monday, June 28th, 1880, was the result of a plan by the Kelly Gang to derail a Police Special Train carrying Indigenous trackers (the Gang's primary targets), into a deep gully adjacent to the railway line.
