The Entities, also called the Fears, the Powers, the Dread Powers, and The Things That Were Fear are the principle antagonists of The Magnus Archives, and the phenomena that more mundane and earthly antagonists serve.

Apr 12, 2023 · I’m looking into the 5 basic fears (a concept theorised by Karl Albrecht in 2012 I think), and was wondering how other fans of the show thought the entities were “made up” by these 5 main fears: extinction, mutilation, loss of autonomy, separation and ego death.

Jun 26, 2021 · This is an attempt to categorize the 14 fears in Smirke's List (actually 15, counting The Extinction). Of course, such things are beyond mortal man's ken and we cannot hope to truly understand the beings which seek to feast on our fears... but we can try!

With this knowledge he devised a new ritual, one that would summon all 14 Fears simultaneously. At the heart of this was the Archivist, someone who could serve as a living record of fear. To complete the ritual, Magnus needed them to be marked by all 14 Fears, in both mind and body.

I came up with two versions - the one on the left works better as a cycle of neighbouring fears, but the one on the right works better for pairing opposites, imo.

I think most religious fears could fit into Smirke's 14. Fear of being witnessed or judged could be the Eye. Fear of being manipulated by divine beings could be the Spider. Fear of physical punishment like Hell could be Desolation. Fear of there being no God could be the Lonely. Fear that you got it all wrong could be the Spiral.
