The National Data Buoy Center's network of Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART®) stations report water-column height and are used for validating whether subsurface earthquakes have generated tsunamis.
The DART II surface buoy, shown in Figure 5, relays information and commands from the tsunameter and the satellite network. The buoy contains two identical electronic systems to provide redundancy in case one of the units fails.

Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART®)
A near real-time prototype tsunami reporting system has been designed using a surface buoy moored over a BPR as a relay point for tsunami data. It is not practical for technical reasons to make an electrical connection from the sea floor to the surface to transmit data.
The TAO project: NextGeneration ATLAS
Since that time, the array has been the centerpiece of an international climate study with nearly 70 surface buoys in the TAO array spanning the Pacific from approximately 8°N to 8°S from longitudes 137°E to 95°W.
