The M26 Pershing is a heavy tank, later designated as a medium tank, [nb 1] formerly used by the United States Army. It was used in the last months of World War II during the Invasion of Germany and extensively during the Korean War.

By September 1944, the U.S. Army Ordnance Department realized the critical need for an American tank that could take on the German Panther and Tiger after reviewing battle reports of armored actions that had taken place in France since the Normandy landings in June.
