The ICE 2 is the second series of German high-speed trains and one of six in the Intercity-Express family since 1995.

Variations in pressure and temperature give rise to different phases of ice, which have varying properties and molecular geometries. Currently, twenty-one phases, including both crystalline and amorphous ices have been observed.

The ICE 2 only consists of one power unit and seven cars (instead of two power units and up to fourteen cars), so it is half as long as an ICE 1. If high capacity is needed, two of them can be coupled together with a new automatic Scharfenberg coupler.

ICE 2 trains feature electric sockets at selected seats, ICE 3 and ICE T trains have sockets at nearly every seat. The ICE 3 and ICE T are similar in their interior design, but the other ICE types differ in their original design.
