The resulting DC-3 (or DST - Douglas Sleeper Transport as it then was) flew for the first time on December 17 1935. <p>An almost instant sales success, the DC-3 became the mainstay of the US domestic airline network in the years prior to World War 2.

Probably photographed in the February, this SPANZ machine named 'Ernest Rutherford' was one of three Dakotas converted to 'Viewmaster' standard which had specially enlarged windows. TAA retired their venerable DC-3 VH-AES and later displayed her in Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport Terminal carpark, next to a Taxi rank. (The Terminal building is at rear.) The aircraft, then painted silver, was displayed in a banked flight attitude (with wheels down), suspended from an archway.
