Before reading about Xiangqi and Shogi's rules, I thought Shogi was a much more complex game because of the recapture rule. However, I realized I could play decent games more easily in Shogi, but I struggle much more with Xiangqi. I feel like it's because Shogi is closer to chess than Xiangqi. Do you think Shogi is really closer to chess than ...

Nov 6, 2020 · I've checked Jim's books, but I'm not sure if any of them suits what I'm looking for. Since there are plenty of apps for practicing puzzles, I'd like a book that shows the main ideas about how to play xiangqi. Right now I feel like almost randomly moving my pieces around the board, with no idea what I'm doing, just paying attention to tactics.

In janggi, the elephant moves one space in vertically or horizontally, then two spaces diagonally in that same direction, akin to a beefed up horse.

Pawn structure also just doesn't seem to be a thing in Xiangqi. Again, it just seems to be too dynamic. Xiangqi feels like playing opposite-sides castling positions to me. The attacking side will win out so you must attack effectively and directly. I'm no expert though. I'd be happy to be corrected by a strong xiangqi player :)
Why do you think Xiangqi and other chess variants are not as
Oct 10, 2023 · I tend to disagree myself. In terms of game-tree complexity, xiangqi is a lot more difficult than chess. Shogi is a lot more than xiangqi, and Go is a lot more than xiangqi. Part of the reason is that chess only has 64 squares, xiangqi has 90 intersections, shogi has 81 squares (but pieces can respawn), and Go has 19x19 lines = 361 intersections.
