Mar 13, 2014 · Flint and steel is a little different than ferro rods. With a ferro rod you want a hard, cornered spine on your steel to shave the ferro rod. With steel/flint the hard flint shaves the steel, so you want a medium hardness in a high carbon steel.

Oct 28, 2011 · Flint is very rare, i have to go digging in old tree holes and quarries to even find one tiny piece. But if you find a good piece of quarts or any other rock with a decent angle on the sides then it can be used to throw sparks from steel.

Oct 24, 2010 · The flint needs to be sharp. It must be able to dig into the surface of the striker. The flint will loose its edge quickly and you'll have to re-knap a new sharp edge. Here are some pictures of a dull edge and the spark shower.

May 1, 2017 · Kenneth by looking at your practice rock ,looks like you are in Texas and that landscape rock is miserable to work even for an experienced flintknapper. You found you tube and you should be able to figure out how to spall up your flint for usable pieces. The Texas rock when heat treated makes great flint striker rock and throws a good spark.

Jun 27, 2011 · Take a stone that is harder than the flint (whether it be quartz, chert, jasper, feldspar, whatever), and strike it against the flint so that there is a 45 degree angle left behind. Like flintknapping. If it is too thin, it will shatter, but this type of edge should do the job well.
