The resultant design inextricably and pleasantly connects its inhabitants with the tropical environment of this island nation. The design of Rock House is a sophisticated amalgamation of elements of both longhouses and the aforementioned Balinese compounds. The ground floor is laid out more or less as a single long structure, with one side occupied by large kitchen/dining rooms and a living room. These are separated by a staircase, concealed on both ends by storage spaces.

Nonetheless, the Rock House masterfully blends these disparate influences together to create an unexpected, yet convincing, design solution. The dense and riotous tropical landscape of Coconut Grove affords the home its proper context.

Two interlocking, rectangular volumes create a dynamic residential design in a leafy suburb of Miami.
