On the other hand, it makes good sense to speak of the 'west side of the campus', because a campus can be seen as having sides. When referring to a side, 'on' is the usual preposition: 'on the left side', 'on either side' etc.

BrE allows for this, as well as the hyphenated and spaced versions. I suspect that the hyphenated version is the most common. The Anglican Province of South East Asia uses the spaced version.
