The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Fowler Class 4F is a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotive designed for medium freight work. They represent the ultimate development of the Midland Railway 's six-coupled tender engines.

The locomotives of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway can be broken down into four eras: The period after 1930 when the locomotives had been absorbed into the stock of the LMS (1930–1966). The railway had a locomotive, carriage and wagon works at Highbridge, Somerset, but this closed in 1930.

44557-44561 were built by Armstrong Whitworth for the Midland Railway in 1922 to be used on the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway (SDJR) where they were numbered 57-61. They became part of the LMS stock in 1930.

Five engines were constructed by Armstrong Whitworth for the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway in 1922, numbered 57–61. They were absorbed into LMS stock in 1930, becoming 4557–4561 and included in the 44027-44606 class.

Originally introduced by the Midland Railway, it says a lot that the LMS continued to produce this class of locomotive until 1941.
