The pinyon ips (fig. 1) is a small, brown, cylindrical bark beetle with spines on the distal portion of the abdomen, which is typical for this genus of bark beetles. Pinyon ips has five such spines. The adult’s length ranges between 1/8 and 1/4 inch (3 and 6 mm).

The pinyon ips (PIB) belongs to a group of bark beetles called Ips, or engraver, beetles. The PIB is a native insect in Nevada’s woodlands and is typically present in low numbers. As with many forest insects often considered as “pests”, the PIB plays an important role in the ecosystem.

These pines make good visual screens, windbreaks, and wildlife habitat. Major diseases include black stain root disease, dwarf mistletoe, armillaria root disease, and pinyon decline. Monitor nearby pine trees for signs of Ips attacks. If known populations are nearby, an insecticide (carbamate; pyrethroid) applied to the bark prior to beetle flight can protect trees.

The pinyon Ips (Ips confusus) is an aggressive bark beetle that can devastate pinyon pine forests. Our long term objective is to develop new strategies to control I. confusus based on disrupting pheromone production.

This species of Ips beetle can kill more pinyon (Pinus edulis) trees than any other pest. While pinyon pines are the preferred host, I. confusus can also attack other pine species.
