When my fossilized bones were discovered by an American anthropologist named Donald Johanson in 1974, I provided clues about the origins of humankind. Some call me "the missing link," but I do not subscribe to this lofty title. In evolution, there are no missing links: it's a very gradual process.

In 1981, the Institute of Human Origins (IHO) in Berkeley, CA was created with the goal to pursue an integrative strategy for research and discovery central to our founding mission—bridging social, earth, and life science approaches to the most important questions concerning the course, causes, and timing of events in the human career over deep time.
