The United States Air Force ordered 60 CF6 powered DC-10s as KC-10A Extender tanker transports. A number of major and catastrophic accidents marred the DC-10's service record in the mid to late 1970s, but the various causes of these accidents were overcome and the DC-10 continues to operate reliably. Production ceased in 1989.
DC-10: Major And Catastrophic Accidents? - Airliners.net
Dec 4, 2005 · Boston, curiously, saw a couple DC-10 accidents. An Iberia DC-10 hit approach lights landing at Logan; the plane was written off after the accident. Then there was the World Airways DC-10 that was coming in during bad winter weather from BWI or EWR. It landed long, failed to slow down with the concrete remaining, and ended up off the runway and ...
DC10 Landing Gear Question - Airliners.net
Feb 21, 2004 · DC-10-10/DC-10-15 was designed for medium range ops. Light enough to go on 2 sets of main gears. DC-10-30/DC-10-40 was designed for longer range ops. Heavier than the earlier models (allowing the extra fuel for longer flts) thus an extra main gear.
Difference Between DC 10-10 And DC 10-30 - Airliners.net
May 21, 2005 · The DC-10-10 was the initial model, basically deigned to go US-Transcontinental. It was not very capable doing longrange, although some airlines used it, for sure with payload restriction or additional fuelstops. The DC-10-30 was the longrange aircraft. It got a higher grossweight and therefore it needed an additional maingear.
Why was DC10 better than L1011? - Airliners.net
Oct 29, 2017 · eielef wrote:Seems a simple task, but I'd like to know your reasons and opinions! Thanks, Eielef @MOW The L-1011 was a superior airplane, but the DC-10 beat it to market, had engine options, its upgrade path was a little bit easier (engine replacement), and McD pursued improvements while Lockheed, still hurting from the initial development, essentially decided to get out of the commercial ...

NW DC-10-40 vs DC-10-30 - Airliners.net
Jul 14, 2020 · NW acquired their DC-10-40s with trans-ocean flights in mind and, until the DC-10 grounding in 1979, used their -40s on their then-new trans-Atlantic routes. It seems (again IIRC) when DC-10s were able to return to service they were relegated primarily/almost entirely to high density domestic services and largely/mostly withdrawn from ...
United DC-10's - Airliners.net
May 8, 2020 · The DC-10s were pretty common in domestic use. One sample market I am familiar with was SMF-DEN. The first morning flight upgauged from the short DC-8s to the stretch -8, and then to the DC-10, which was on the run for several years through the late 70's and early 80's.
