Type 96B MBT at Tank Biathlon 2017. The Type 96 (Chinese: 96式; pinyin: Jiǔliù shì) or ZTZ96 is a Chinese second generation main battle tank (MBT). The final evolution of the Type 88 design, the Type 96 entered service with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in 1997.

The ZTZ96A (ZTZ96A式主战坦克; industry code WZ122R) is a major upgrade to the ZTZ96 with new FCS, upgraded protection and powerplant, presenting a more economical MBT to support the superior but more expensive fleet of ZTZ99s and ZTZ99A s in PLAGF service.

Introduced in Update "Wind of Change", the ZTZ96A (P) is a prototype of the ZTZ96A. It features a distinct turret armour arrangement compared to its production counterpart: instead of the arrowhead-shaped ERA mount, it boasts high-hardness spaced armour in an unusual "needle-nose" profile reminiscent of the Chieftain 's silhouette.
