The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is home to over a dozen species of primates. The homestead for the Zoo’s gorillas and orangutans is the Great Ape House. Within the house, floor-to-ceiling viewing panes allow visitors to view these endangered animals up close.

Utah’s Hogle Zoo is home to four Bornean orangutans: Mia, Kawan, Acara, and Tuah. You can visit them in the Great Apes habitat, which has indoor and outdoor spaces.

The award-winning, state-of-the art Regenstein Center for African Apes features naturalistic indoor and outdoor living space for endangered chimpanzees and western lowland gorillas.

Great apes, including gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, and bonobos, are our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom. These highly intelligent and social primates share many characteristics with humans, including complex emotions, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity for communication.

The Penny & Jock Fortune International Chimpanzee Complex can home up to 30 chimpanzees and allows them to travel the zoo in an elevated trail.
