Prior to the destruction of Krypton, Zod, his wife Ursa, and accomplice Non rebel against their planet's oppressive government, but soon become lawless would-be tyrants who lust for power. After an ill-fated insurrection led by Zod, the government sentences the trio to death.

The Disciples of Zod are General Zod's two followers, Aethyr and Nam-Ek. Along with Zod himself, they form the Zod Trio. The two were first referred to as such in the television series Smallville.

Zod is the ruthless, arrogant and megalomaniacal leader of three Kryptonian criminals banished to the Phantom Zone and unwittingly set free by Superman (Christopher Reeve).

Zod seeks revenge for imprisonment by pursuing the planet's last son, Kal-El, alias “Superman.” As a result, Kal-El, who had unknowingly freed them, must now face threats from his long-dead home planet. Zod also allies with Lex Luthor, who still aspires to world domination.

General Zod appears in the 1988 animated series Superman episode "The Hunter", voiced by René Auberjonois. This version is imprisoned in the Phantom Zone with Ursa and Faora (two Kryptonian women) whereas most portrayals of the conspiracy show the Zod trio composed of two men and one woman.
