Zeng Guofan, Marquis Yiyong (traditional Chinese: 曾國藩; simplified Chinese: 曾国藩; pinyin: Zēng Guófān; Wade–Giles: Tseng 1 Kuo 2-fan 1; [2] 26 November 1811 – 12 March 1872), birth name Zeng Zicheng, courtesy name Bohan (伯涵), was a Chinese statesman and military general of the late Qing dynasty.

曾国藩（1811年11月26日~1872年3月12日），字伯涵，号涤生，湖南湘乡人（今双峰县荷叶镇），是“晚清第一名臣”、战略家、理学家、文学家、湘军的创立者和统帅。曾国藩原名子城。道光十八年（1838年）中进士，入翰林院；后升迁内阁学士，兵部侍郎和礼部侍郎。

Zeng Guofan 曾國藩 (1811-1872), actual name Zeng Zicheng 曾子城, courtesy name Juwu 居武, style Disheng 滌生, was one of the most important ministers of the late Qing period 清 (1644-1911). He hailed from Xiangxiang 湘鄉 (modern Shuangfeng 雙峰, Hunan) and obtained the academic jinshi degree in 1838.

Although best-known for his military and political accomplishments, Zeng Guofan was an innovative figure in 19th century literature. Born and raised in modern Hunan, he passed the jinshi examinations in 1838 and was appointed to the Hanlin Academy.
