Throughout her practice, Xa uses water and marine ecologies as metaphors for exploring the unknown whilst also alluding to abstract notions of homeland. Xa’s practice is highly collaborative, and she has developed ongoing exchanges with dancers, and musicians. Since 2006, Xa has worked closely with artist Benito Mayor Vallejo.

May 21, 2020 · Water and its soothing undulations inform much of Zadie Xa’s practice. Growing up surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and later heavily influenced by Korean marine life, Xa views water as both metaphor and material: it is a universal, abstract reminder of a home that is both fixed in place and drifting in uncertainty.
