The Zilog Z8000 is a 16-bit microprocessor architecture designed by Zilog and introduced in early 1979. Two chips were initially released, differing only in the width of the address bus; the Z8001 had a 23-bit bus while the Z8002 had a 16-bit bus.

The Z8000 series introduced a number of attractive new features in the microprocessor world from the mini-computer and mainframe worlds: Regular general-purpose register file (16 16-bit registers that could be used as accumulators, address registers, index registers or stackpointers)

Jul 25, 2022 · It was a 16-bit microprocessor, intended to compute in the 16-bit microcomputer market. It’s contemporaries in the 80s would have been the 8086/8088 and the Motorola 68000. The Z-8000 didn’t quite make it, it was only used in a very few computers. x86 won out, Z-8000 lost. Build one yourself!

Oct 15, 2010 · The Z8000 was made in two main versions: The higher end Z8001 which, by use of segmentation, could address up to 8Mb of memory, and the Z8002 which could only address 64k. Memory segmentation works by essentially having 2 address buses.
