Yuan Zhen (Chinese: 元稹; Wade–Giles: Yüan Chen; 779 – September 2, 831 [1]), courtesy name Weizhi (微之), was a Chinese novelist, poet, and politician of the middle Tang dynasty.

Yuan Zhen (born 779, Luoyang, Henan province, China—died 831, Wuchang, Hubei province) was a key literary figure of the middle Tang dynasty of China, influential in the guwen (“ancient-style prose”) revival, which employed the styles of the early classical Chinese writers.

Yuan Zhen pioneered psychological exploration and possibilities of plot development. His tale mixed narration, poetry and letters from one character to another to demonstrate emotion rather than describe it, making it in one sense an epistolary novel.

In literature, Yuan Zhen was one of the leaders of the new yuefu movement which advocated structural freedom, seriousness of intent and simplicity of language. Yuan edited his own complete works in 823, and later did the same for his friend, Bai Juyi.

Yuan Zhen wrote the most poems that belonged to the category of lyrical aria. These include short poems about the scenery in front of the flower house and the feelings of the moment, as well as poems that drive away the words and maximize the sounds and rhymes, either in thousands of words or in 500 words.
