The Yamaha DX9 is a spin off synthesizer of the family of the DX7 built by Yamaha. It uses FM synthesis [6] and has 16 note polyphony; however, it only has four FM operators for sound generation compared with six on the DX7 (without alternative firmware ROM). [7]

The DX9 was a not-so-special spin off of the aggressively popular DX7. The DX9 wasn't a great synth, it had all of the headache problems associated with its DX7 relative. Difficult programming and limited MIDI implementation to name a few. Still, it is a 4-operator FM synth like the other DX synths and is capable of interesting sounds.

DX9 Origins
The DX9 is a strange beast, released as the ' little brother ' of the all-conquering DX7 but with design decisions that meant its subsequent commercial failure was almost guaranteed. It was very obviously a crippled DX7.
The DX9 employs unique and sophisticated FM digital tone generation technology combined with microcomputer control to permit creation of voices that are more "live" than voices available with any other system available.
