This is the first prototype Hornet, YF-18A-1 from fiscal year 1976. The Hornet made its first flight from McDD St. Louis on 18 Nov'78 and delivered to the US Navy at Paxtuxent River (MD) in Jan'79. The Full-Scale Development Hornet was later converted to RF-18, served the NASA from 3 Jun'85 and returned to the US Navy.

Jan 19, 2021 · The first U.S. Navy YF-18A Hornet (BuNo 160775) had only been delivered from the McDonnell Douglas plant at St. Louis, Missouri in October 1978, making the trials aircraft shown above very early indeed. At this time, the Navy still fielded lots of Vietnam-era aircraft including the A-7, A-4, and F-4, which the Hornet was intended to phase out.
