Erythronium americanum, the trout lily, yellow trout lily, fawn lily, yellow adder's-tongue, or yellow dogtooth violet, is a species of perennial, colony forming, spring ephemeral flower native to North America and dwelling in woodland habitats.

Delicate yellow flowers held 6-12″ tall, the petals reflex up (like a cyclamen). a beautiful early spring woodland plant, small and delicate. The leaves are large, elliptical with brown splotches that make attractive masses in a shady area, the plants spread by slender runners.

Several of the common names for this plant refer to the flower or leaf appearance at different phases of its growth cycle. As one example, the Trout lily name refers to its leaf mottling resembling a trout moving through water and the general shape of the petals.

These tepals are narrowly elliptic-lanceolate in shape, and they are often tinted red or reddish brown along their outer sides. The stamens are about ½" long and their anthers are yellow or yellow-brown. The blooming period occurs during mid-spring and lasts about 2 weeks.

Both the Yellow and the White Trout Lily have tulip-like green leaves with silvery-maroon mottled markings. The plants will spread slowly to form colonies, but can take many years to flower. A single, very attractive flower will bloom for just a few days on mature plants early in the spring.
