Y2K Happened because programs had been lazily written to store year as a simple 2-digit field (ie 95 for 1995) and assume 19XX, so when the year became 2000, software would think it was 1900. UNIX systems stored their time differently, as the number of seconds since January 1st 1970, and as such they avoided the issue entirely.

Jul 9, 2023 · The same thing as the Y2K problem. Years ago many systems and programs only stored the last 2 digits of the year. Instead of 1999 it just had 99. On Jan 01, 2000 the program would calculate that as 1900 not 2000. Took a lot of time and reprogramming to make sure everything would do date calculations correctly.
