Why a Yawl or Ketch instead of a sloop - Boat Design Net
Apr 29, 2009 · Being tall, I prefer the yawl as the mizzen boom is well out of the way however our friend Saltydog should not dismiss the ketch rig as usually the mizzen main is bigger than a yawl mizzen - possibly better balanced and more manageable. The pics below of a C&N 55 yawl and a Swan 65 ketch show the difference well.
How to re-power and eventually rig a sloop into a ketch or yawl?
Aug 25, 2013 · Having just read a fantastic and enlightening thread on a ketch vs yawl rig I decided to join the forum. I'm considering upgrading to a larger sailboat (32'). Upon further inspection the prior owner removed the 4cyl diesel inboard and the shaft (for whatever reason) patch and plugged it, and replaced it with a nice sized gas outboard off the ...

Jul 16, 2016 · The Pearson 35 as a yawl is a fine cruising boat and though the yawl rig was used to take advantage of some ratings under the CCA, shortly after it was built, the IOR rule came to dominate, so centerboard and yawl rig boats fell from favor. The vast majority of …

Can Modern Sail & Rigging Tech Improve a Ketch Rig?
Jan 31, 2016 · Because of my love for classic lines and old wooden boats I've come to greatly admire multiple mast rigs in general, but particularly the ketch rig. So as I gather the pros and cons are (generally) this; - Ketch Rigs (and Yawl) were more common and favored in older designs before the invention of modern sail handling equipment.

Thoughts on a rig please??? | Page 4 | Boat Design Net
Apr 24, 2009 · The versatility of this rig helps recommend it. Its complexity somewhat condemns it. Rig (E)y, the Gaff headed Cat yawl, is just about the same except the jib is eliminated and the Main sail has been increased by lengthening the hoist with a taller Main Mast. No more need for Running Backstays or a Jib Downhaul or Jib Sheets.
Yawl mast design using Euler - Boat Design Net
Jan 12, 2010 · I am currently working on a yawl design and have started thinking about the masts. Wharram's Mana's rig - Boat Design Net
Mar 30, 2016 · I know that it is a cat ketch but considering the respective areas of the 2 sails I took the liberty to call it a cat yawl. But this is not the point of the post. New Dory Rig: Lug-Yawl - Boat Design Net
Jul 25, 2008 · My question regards balancing the rig. My aim was to keep the C/B box in the same place for simplicity and so that the traditional dory rig could still be used interchangeable with the drawn lug-yawl. I found the CE for my rig and the alpha rig and they are shown as hatch marks on the baseline. Notice how far aft the CE for the alpha is!
