The Yakovlev Yak-9 (Russian: Яковлев Як-9; NATO reporting name: Frank) [2] is a single- engine, single-seat multipurpose fighter aircraft used by the Soviet Union and its allies during World War II and the early Cold War.

Golovachev's Yak-9M is a premium gift Soviet fighter. It was introduced as a premium pack in Update 1.49 "Weapons of Victory" and was removed from the Gaijin store in May 2016. It has since been brought back on occasion, such as the 2017 "Special Discounts!", the 2021 May sale, and the 2022 May sale.

The Yak-9PVO was a version of the Yak-9M, designed to guard the USSR airspace in the operational rear, and differed from the usual one by better instrumentation, a smaller supply of oil and fuel, and the absence of armor.

The Yak-9 was more the all-around Soviet fighter and could be identified by the large scoop under the engine, which was absent in the Yak-3. The Yak-9 had an excellent (small) sustained turning diameter at low speeds, which allowed it to turn inside of the German fighters it faced.

The Yak-9T had a 37 mm Nudelmann-Suranov cannon with which to attack tanks. The Yak-9 would become the ultimate Russian fighter and was destined to be produced in larger numbers than any other Yakovlev aircraft, and took part on every major battle after its introduction during the autumn of 1942.

The Yak-9M was as a modest change to the Yak-9D. with the cockpit moved 1ft 4in to the rear like on Yak-9T, numerous fixes and improvements based on experience with previous versions. The Yak-9PVO was the Yak-9M air defence version. The Yak-9PVO was fitted with better instrument equipment.

Yak-9PD -- To deal with high altitude German reconnaissance aircraft, this model was fitted with a two-stage, gear-driven supercharger and single 20mm cannon. Production ceased in 1947, but not before a number of communist-bloc countries took delivery of later models.
