You would think it would be an easy and stress free decision, BUT, there is some tough competition. My budget was around $1,000 +/- a few hundred. The Icom IC-7300 is a beautiful radio and that was my runner up.

It was developed by the Japan Amateur Radio League and contrary to popular belief is not proprietary to Icom (in fact, Kenwood has also used D-STAR as their amateur radio digital mode of choice). I think it would have been helpful if Yaesu had adopted it as well but they chose to implement their own standard.

May 3, 2017 · I was looking for 7 screws on the top but I only counted 5 not thinking that the speaker was connected. Glad it did not fall out. I guess the heat held the foam in place and I added this filter to both of my yaesu 857d and I had no problem,go figure.

Mar 16, 2002 · My Yaesu FT-2500M has seen a lot of use and only the spring in the mic is a bit light after seven years and I've had to replace the bulbs twice. For my Yaesu FT-2200, well it's been running packet radio since late 1996 24/7 without a single problem. My Yaesu FT-840, FT-847, and FT-920 all seem like outstanding radios too.

Aug 5, 2021 · The FT-991A in my opinion is unmatched in the all band/all mode world FOR THE price, and has great audio on side band when used with a quality microphone. I plan to keep both rigs for the time being but if pressed would probably let go of the IC-7300 first just because the Yaesu covers more bands.
