time for a sticky: Xserve upgrade guide - MacRumors Forums
Aug 30, 2018 · I think you should probably start by replacing microcodes for cpu support like it was firstly made with mac pro 4.1, then adding nvme like it was made with mac pro 5.1 prior bootrom 140 was out. Then we preserve our xserve identification gaining 12 core config with nvme boot without cross-flashing tower-based cibling firmware. Just an idea though.

What to do with Apple Xserve (Early 2008) - MacRumors Forums
May 23, 2010 · I picked up an Xserve Xeon 2.8 "Eight Core" (Early 2008) machine with 80/300/300 hard drives and Mac OS Server 10.5.8 installed and 6 GB of RAM. XServe Not Recognizing Drives in Bays - Apple Community
Dec 13, 2022 · The Xserve drive caddies are very particular to the type and size of drives they will accept. In short, if it isn't a model number on a very short list of supported models, you're largely out of luck. Jul 16, 2019 · I'm still looking for a backup machine and found an XServe 3,1 for quite cheap. I'd love to see some progress here before wasting money. So far, if I understood correctly, people have been able to: Flash the latest Mac Pro 5,1 bootrom (144.0.0.whatever) and obtain native NVMe and AFPS booting capability. This made them lose the leds but you can apparently gain them back thanks to a software ...
