It focuses on the Ogg family of formats, the most successful of which has been Vorbis, an open and freely licensed audio format and codec designed to compete with the patented WMA, MP3 and AAC.

If you are a Windows user who wants to be able to listen to .ogg files in Windows Media Player, then this is what you want. The Xiph.org DirectShow filters support playing of files encoded with Vorbis, Speex, Theora, and/or FLAC.

Vorbis audio compression. Ogg Vorbis is a fully open, non-proprietary, patent-and-royalty-free, general-purpose compressed audio format for mid to high quality (8kHz-48.0kHz, 16+ bit, polyphonic) audio and music at fixed and variable bitrates from 16 to 128 kbps/channel.
