Mar 15, 2021 · I play both xiangqi and shogi at non-beginner levels (played OTB tournaments for xiangqi and ~1300 playok, 6-1 Tiantian; 1-dan 81Dojo for shogi) and studied both a little. Finally, I would find xiangqi a little harder to understand than shogi - the positional judgment in the middlegames and technical portions in the endgame still elude me.

Jun 7, 2017 · In xiangqi, the elephant moves two spaces diagonally in any direction, and is restricted to your half of the board, making it a mainly defence-oriented piece. In janggi, the elephant moves one space in vertically or horizontally, then two spaces diagonally in that same direction, akin to a beefed up horse.

Obviously the specific differences between the games are easy to find on Wikipedia and elsewhere. Oct 10, 2023 · I don't think we should call Xiangqi and Shogi as chess variants. Ppl who only play chess might do so but in China and Japan, Chess, Xiangqi and Shogi are called chess games. Just like American football and football are both ball games, but not variants of each other. Chess is acutally a type of game outside of the west.
