Xia Gui (Chinese: 夏珪; Wade–Giles: Hsia Kui; fl. 1195–1224), courtesy name Yuyu (禹玉), was a Chinese landscape painter of the Song dynasty. Very little is known about his life, and only a few of his works survive, but he is generally considered one of China's greatest artists.

Xia Gui (flourished 1195–1224, Qiantang [now Hangzhou], Zhejiang province, China) was one of China’s greatest masters of landscape painting, cofounder with Ma Yuan of the Ma-Xia school. The album leaf and the hand scroll with a continuous panorama were his predominant forms.

Jun 23, 2024 · Xia Gui (active early 13 th century) (pronounced ‘sha gway’) was one of the ‘four artists of the Southern Song’ (南宋四家). His almost minimalist, evocative paintings exemplify Southern Song painting styles. Long after Xia and – the Song dynasty – had disappeared, his paintings and style lived on in China, Japan, Korea and beyond.

Two of the major works of the Japanese painter Sesshū (1420–1506), both hand scrolls, appear to be modeled on paintings by Xia. As late as the early 17th century in China, a few painters were still producing landscapes avowedly “in the manner of Xia Gui.”

These simplified yet naturalistic slanted brushstrokes describe the earthen forms and hills. Forms were first outlined with dry ink and then washed with ink that varies in tone from jet-black to gray.

Xia Gui (夏圭, fl. 1195–1224), courtesy name Yuyu (禹玉), a native of Qiantang (present-day Hangzhou), Zhejiang province, was a celebrated landscapist of the Southern Song dynasty. He is considered one of the Four Great Masters of the Southern Song dynasty, alongside Li Tang, Liu Songnian, and Ma Yuan.
