A xerophile (from Greek ξηρός : xērós 'dry' and φίλος : phílos 'loving') [1] is an extremophilic organism that can grow and reproduce in conditions with a low availability of water, also known as water activity.

Microorganisms that thrive in xeric (desert or inadequate supply of water) conditions are known as xerophiles. Water is crucial in all organisms, it maintains the structure and shape, balances the osmotic concentration in cells, and dissolves molecules. Lack of water can cause xeric stress where organisms cannot grow.
